REACH-OUT
Vol.4
no.1 August- September, 2001

Wishing you a great
school year in 2001-2002!
6, 5, 4,… it really isn’t a countdown but rather the number of issuses
of Reach-out over the last 3 years.
The diminishing number of issues are
an indication of other things going on, especially the reform in
education, the fact I am getting to know more and more of you personally and
taking into account that Reach-out is only one vehicule for establishing
contact and passing on information, finally it consumes a large amount of time to research, prepare and present.
This year I am thinking of phasing out the printed version – eliminating
the photocopying and paper. More and more, computers are available to consult
and the version via Internet could be printed or only the pages that the
visitor is interested in. If you have a preference in this decision, please let
me know.

Spotlight on: Evaluation
October 9th
q Evaluation (assessment) in elementary
ESL will be the topic for at least 2 days of regional training
sessions beginning on October 9th. The session will be held at the new Multi-center
at the CsRS administrative building in Sherbrooke on the campus of the
Triolet (near the University) from 9 to 3:45. The session is in
collaboration with the CSRS and CSHC so we are expecting 63 primary ESL teachers
from the three school boards. No lunch will be served on the premises This
session is open to all ESL elementary specialists
/teachers.

school year:
LANGUAGE EXCHANGE PROGRAM FOR GROUPS OF STUDENTS FROM ENGLISH AND
FRENCH SCHOOLS IN QUÉBEC
Exams 2002:
Changes for the coming June (not
January) exams in secondary 5 include 50% across the board for all of
the 4 skills (the end of 40-60% but in sec.5 only). New codes for
production (136-510) and for comprehension (136-520) will apply. In the exam schedule, a separate secondary 5
exam for written production will be give June 13th, 1:30 -
3:00 and the comprehension parts will be administered on June 17th
from 9 to 11:00.
The secondary 4 exam which
will stay basically as before will be held on June 14th from 1:00 to
3:30.
Exams 2001:
Comments on the exams are always welcome.
Sometimes we can make a difference.
Des Sommets
Board policy:
We will probably continue the
policy of optional school board exams in grade 6 and secondary 3. This means
that the school board (via me) sends out exams at those levels that the schools
/ teachers choose to administer to the students or that they may reject and
choose other exams from BIM, RREALS, etc. to present.
We have BIM concertation exams at
the board with a couple of exams available for special situations but these
exams are available on demand only through principals (school board policy).
Each school is supposed to make the general BIM CD available to the teachers
with help from the APO to use for exam purposes including June and there are
also a few exams through RREALS that I send out as I receive them during the
year.
As we make the shift from precise,
objective, knowledge evaluation to global competency-based assessment, exams
will undergo a definite evolution if not extinction as we know them know. The
dinosoars of the reform age!

Evaluation:
Cathy MacDonald, resp.
at MEQ for evaluation - the old rules have
not been changed yet to take into account the reform but unofficially; be
creative.
Keep it simple - keep it
authentic and meaningful.
Keep it related to
learning - which in 2nd cycle is mostly oral interaction therefore
evaluation depends on the teachers' (your) professional judgment especially
through well-documented observation and with student and peer feedback.
Portfolios are more
suited to written than oral (audio/video cassettes ?? - $$), take time
and demand maintenance.
The 2001-2002 Perf. Coll.
will be on evaluation for elementary specialists of the region - day 1 in
October - day 2 probably in January and day 3 on a ped. day later in the year.
Report cards:
Example - 3 competencies
- A, B, C.
A majority of regions in
Québec have only 2 reporting periods in a year for English specialists (source:
RREALS executive meeting, June 2001)
Books/Material:
Activities:
Using computers to make
material (Bingo cards and other re-usable material for activities)
Cycle 2 (grade 3 and 4) emphasis
on the classroom
q
simple activities taking time to explain in English
Next meeting to be on a
planning day …
Sept 21 - I can't but
maybe the 19th of October.
Possible topics:
- What we could write on report cards?
- How often we could report?
- Making descriptive scales /rubrics.
- Cooperating on building a bank of short class projects/tasks.
Update on elementary evaluation:
The MEQ has decided to send out
standardized but adaptable report
cards. This measure is meant to avert criticism over the variety and complexity
possible if each school were left to design their own report cards from
scratch.
Project: for grade 5 or
6 students
1. inter-school
correspondence with English schools via e-mail in collaboration with Station
05. Topics: me, my school, my area.
2. project to publish class
information on Internet - Rescol $$$$ for video-TV & camera
3.
End of year ( May) exchange for 3-4 days or 3-4 common activity days -
busing, etc. paid. http://www2.qesn.meq.gouv.qc.ca/echange/default_e.htm
Here is some information
on the exchange program though for those who wish to participate in the local
project, we will make a common project application.

LANGUAGE EXCHANGE PROGRAM FOR
GROUPS OF STUDENTS FROM ENGLISH AND FRENCH SCHOOLS IN QUÉBEC
2000-2001
|
||||||
|
The main objective of the language exchange program
is to give groups of students from English and French elementary and
secondary schools the opportunity to use their second language in everyday
situations related to what they learn in school. The program also aims to
foster communication between the anglophone and francophone communities
within Québec. The Ministère de l’Éducation du Québec
coordinates the program as a whole and, with the help of the federal
Department of Canadian Heritage, funds most of the direct costs involved. This web site allows any school having
students in elementary school, cycle two and three (Elementary 3, 4, 5 and
6), and secondary school (Secondary I to V) to announce its interest in
setting up an exchange program with another school within Québec by posting
its request in a directory of schools designed for that purpose. Each school
is responsible for selecting its own twin school. As soon as two eligible schools have
agreed to twin themselves up, both the English and the French school must
fill out the appropriate REGISTRATION FORM and provide the required
information as indicated. If you have any questions about this
exchange program, please contact: Richard Bastien Last updated: Tuesday, October

l'apprentissage d'une langue seconde. Les élèves vivront trois jours dans les familles
des enfants jumelés. Durant la journée ils vivront des expériences par des
visites éducatrices et des activités connexes à l'enseignement.
Various exchange programs are offered for
schools especially to promote ESL. Last October's issue of REACH-OUT mentionned
several with links to their sites on the Internet.
S.E.V.E.C. offers various school year and summer programs.
The Des Sommets S.E.V.E.C summer exchange
coordinated by Bill Hogg for the last few years was again a major
success. This program lasted the month of July under the supervision of Sindy
Leclerc with students participating from the various corners of the school
board in activities for 2 weeks here and then 2 weeks in Ontario centered on
learning the second language.
RREALS meetings begin at the end of
September. A new site is available for consultation at
http://station05.qc.ca/partenaires/rreals/
While the meetings are for those in
charge of ESL for the school boards, there is a training session in February
that is open to a limited number of teachers who are funded by their school.
Also you will find links to commented ESL sites and an on-line version of The
Review - a secondary 3 publication from the Monteregie area. Check it out!
Here are a few of the resources
available via Cybersite:
Portfolio Toolkits (zip)
The new MEQ program has been
undergoing a revision since the spring to simplify and make it easier to
understand and apply. The essential of the ESL program has not changed however
its presentation has and the former Program of
Programs is now integrated and things such as areas of life-long
learning and CCC's have been condensed and some renamed. We'll keep you informed
as the information is released but if you are in grades 3 and 4, it's the
spirit we discussed last spring that counts as you begin to apply the reform.
Elementary teachers will have a regional training session on October 9th
on evaluation.
The team writing the secondary
cycle 1 program did a survey of students' interests and activities available
for reference - I've included a few choice pages in annex - thinking you might
like to use the information for "Family Feud" or comparison type
activities. The entire survey is available on request.
is an ongoing project that contains
over 200 Internet links and also suggested books dealing with pedagogical issues related to the Reform in Engish
and/or French.

Meetings will begin in October and new material
will arrive soon after.
ADVANCED COOPERATIVE LEARNING FOR THE ESL-LA
CLASSROOM is a lesson plan available through RREALS in Word format if you are
interested. Contact me.
I spoke with Jean Verette, department head of
English at the Sherbrooke CEGEP about students who had followed the ESL-LA
courses. The variety of "interpretations" of ways of teaching ESL-LA
makes it difficult to establish a standard policy for students who have
followed one or more years of ESL-LA. However, there is a placement test which
should put the higher levels of achievement in evidence.

Included in the annexes of this issue is a
magazine - The Odyssey; written and published by the secondary 3 students at L 'Odyssé in Valcourt under
the guidance (etc., etc.) of Éric Giguère. Not only are there very
thought provoking articles with attention grabbing titles and photos but activities
to accompany and delve into each article. The activities vary from fill in the
blanks activities to crosswords, codes, etc. Éric warns teachers that the
students wrote the articles and not him so there are still some errors but as
an example or as activities the Magazine - The Odyssey is a big hit worth your
time. Bravo to the students and Éric.
Teachers, if you are willing to share please
consider sending in your projects, activities or advice. Someone will
appreciate it for sure!
In the
quest for things new, interesting and pertinent such as activities, sites and
material for all the ESL teachers in the school board, I got discouraged trying
to find what I had not already sent out and decided to recycle. So here is an
index of the contents of the past three years of Reach-out. From the site, you
simply click on the link to go directly to the item that interests you.

&Today We Had Some Weather
Today we had some
weather
like I've never seen
before,
so I pulled on my
galoshes
and I headed out the
door.
It sprinkled, first so
lightly,
it could easily be
mist.
A tornado then came dancing
by,
it swung and did the
twist.
The fogbanks opened up
their vaults
and let out all their
fogs,
and the dog pound took
a pounding;
it was raining cats
and dogs.
It started raining
buckets,
then the rain came
down in sheets.
I had never seen so many
sheets and buckets in
the streets.
I'd planned to watch
the weather
and, though gallantly
I tried,
when it started
hailing taxis
I gave up and went
inside.
