d) Internet resources (Web searches)
Get to know the Internet - treasure hunt Guided tour leading to a variety of WWW resources while developing research and navigation skills
Use the 2 types of Internet searches Basically one type searches the WWW for the word(s) you submitted - AltaVista - and returns all the addresses where it found the requested word(s)

The other type uses categories to direct the search from among registered sites -Yahoo-

read the opinions of others at dejanews  This site allows you to search in newsgroups - where people subscribe to interest groups and exchange comments and information.
outline the major features of search engines and Internet indexes.  http://www.albany.edu/library/internet/choose.html

The search engine using categories would be your first choice for most topics while the other type would be more useful for more obscure searches.

Try a search for the same something in each type of search engine and comment on the results. Search for ESL

Yahoo : Found 23 categories and 378 sites for ESL - the categories help direct the search.

AltaVista found about 445547 Web pages for you

AltaVista Recommends:

Languages > English & ESL

Policy & Research > Bilingual Ed. & ESL

AltaVista will search by language, translate and does have categories.

What are the advantages of sites like MetaCrawler, Searches several search engines at the same time and presents the results.
and Download.com Searches for software : freeware, shareware and demo programs available on the Internet
Where could I find song lyrics, movies, actors and electronic texts of literary classics Using Yahoo (entertainment- etc.) or InFind

Generate an address book with the addresses of all (or almost all) the students in the class.   As students get their addresses, have them send in a message - copy and paste their addresses into a word processor one by one and then format it with a space between each one and no paragraph marks. Copy and paste into the address of a group you set up in your mail programme.
Set up and send a group message.  Use CC to add several recipients.
BCC  is a Blind Carbon Copy - others do not see the address in the list of recipients
Set up a group and add addresses (see above)

Types de fichiers graphiques reconnus par Word (on French language copies)

What are .doc, .txt, .jpg, .bmp, .gif, .rtf, .htm/html, .ppt, .zip and .exe files?  IBM compatible machines have a convention of associating a type of file with a 3 letter extension (.XXX)

.doc - Word document

.txt - ascii text or plain text file

.jpg - is a compressed image format using 24-bit (16million) colour(s) for true to life photos.

.bmp is the standard Windows bitmap image format.

.gif is an image format used on the Internet for logos etc. with 256 colours or less.

.rtf stands for Rich Text Format and is used to keep formating when transferring between programmes or computer systems that is compatible with most word processors under DOS, Windows and on MAC's.

.htm/html is the extension of regular Web pages associated to web browsers.

.ppt is the extension for a Power Point presentation.

.zip is the extension for a compressed file format common on IBM compatibles and used extensively on the Internet to minimise a file(s) that can be sent from point to point.

.exe is the extension for an executable program - rather than a file that contains information - an .exe treats information. WinWord.exe is the central programme of MSWord.

Which are the basic file types that we use on the Internet? Images: .gif, .jpg

Video: .avi, .mov

Text: htm/html

Sound: .wav, .mid, .ra

Other : / .pdf, depending on plu-ins

How can we change file formats? (In word processors and graphics programs) Open in one format depending on the converters available or installed and save as in another format.

See : Convertisseurs de formats de fichier fournis avec Word in Word Help : sommaire

Ex. wp5.1 to Word 97

.bmp to .gif (for the Internet)
