Here is a list of commonly used newspaper terms.


caption
n. 1. an explanation for a picture or illustration. 2. a motion-picture or television subtitle.

editor
n. one who prepares printed matter for publication (i.e. newspaper, book, etc.); one who revises, one who reviews and corrects

columnist
n. one who writes a column (article) in a newspaper or magazine.

copy editor
one who edits and headlines a newspaper; one who prepares copy for printing.

editorial
n. an article or statement, as in a newspaper or on a broadcast, presenting the opinion of the publishers, editors, or owners.

heading
n.1. something that serves as a head, top, or front. 2. a title or caption of a page, chapter, etc.

issue
esp. British. n., v., -sued, -su•ing — n.1. the act of sending out or putting forth. 2. one thing or a series of things printed, published, or distributed at one time. 3. a matter under discussion, the resolution of which is of special or public importance. 4. something proceeding from any source, as a consequence.

lead
n. main story in a newspaper, or the opening paragraph or paragraphs in a story giving the main facts.

leader
n. the leading editorial or article.

quote
n. citation, passage taken from another source; commercial offer; quotation mark, punctuation mark used to enclose a direct citation (the mark " )

scoop
n. (Slang) exclusive news story reported by one newspaper (or television station, etc.).

slant
n. a particular viewpoint, opinion, or attitude.1
